How do GFCI work?

Normally, electrical current flows at a uniform rate through wiring, but when a ground fault occurs, the flow of electricity surges as it jumps to the unintended conductor. A GFCI outlet contains a sensor that monitors the flow of the electrical current through the wires, and when it senses a ground fault(in Electrical terms, "fault" means any variation from the normal current), the GFCI, which also contains an internal switch, shuts off the flow of electricity in the outlet.

In bedrooms, living rooms and other areas where is without water fixtures, regular outlets receptacles are fine. But for the "Wet" rooms, GFCI is must to prevent electrocutions or fire accident.

Where should GFCIs be installed?

The National Electric Code (NEC) requires the installation of GFCI outlets in new construction in areas where electrical outlets are in close proximity to water. Older homes are not required to have GFCI outlets unless the wiring is being updated, but it's a good idea to install them anyway.

The NEC requires GFCIs on all exterior and bathroom receptacles(another term for outlets). GFCIs are also required on all receptacles serving kitchen countertop.In laundry rooms and utility rooms, GFCIs should be installed on outlets within 6 feet of sinks, washing machines, as well as a wet bar,garages and unfinished basements etc.

What's the meaning of TR?

TR means "Tamper Resistant"

Weather Resistant receptacles are manufactured with a shutter mechanism that is designed to block access to the electrical contacts unless a normal two or three prong plug is evenly inserted into the outlet. This shutter mechanism is an important safety feature that helps reduce the shock or electrocution of persons (primarily young children) that attempt to insert foreign objects into receptacles. When using tamper resistant receptacles, please be certain that the plug is fully inserted into the receptacle to ensure a proper and safe connection.

Also the Weather Resistant receptacles are designed for wet and damp locations, required by NEC® Section 406.8, Cold impact resistant and Stainless steel strap and screws.
