There is a new revision to the UL 943 standard. This new standard requires all GFCI receptacle manufacturers to produce GFCIs with an auto-monitoring (self-test) feature that automatically conducts a periodic internal test to confirm the GFCI is able respond to a ground fault. If a problem is detected during the self-test, the GFCI must automatically trip and deny power or provide a visual and/or audible indication

UL 943 Revisions

1. Auto-Monitoring (Self-Test) Function: Allows for periodic automatic testing of the GFCI device and its ability to respond to a ground fault. If a problem is detected, the GFCI will disconnect power to anything connected to it or indicate that there is a problem using visual or audible means.

2. Line-Load Reversal Function: If the GFCI is miswired with the line and load terminals reversed, it will not reset and supply power until it is properly wired. This applies both during initial installation and if the device is removed and reinstalled.

What are the new UL requirements?

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has announced a revision to standard UL 943 that will take effect on June 29, 2015. This new standard requires all GFCI receptacle and circuit breaker manufacturers to produce GFCIs that have an auto-monitoring (self-test) feature that ensures the device's ability to detect and trip in the event of a ground fault and provide end-of-life indication if the device can no longer perform as a GFCI.

An auto-monitoring feature - Electronics need to automatically check operability on regular intervals

If auto-monitoring determines GFCI can no longer offer protection:

Unit should trip and deny power. Two conditions may follow:

1. Unit is no longer able to reset & denies power (or)

2. Unit can reset & is subject to the next auto-monitoring test cycle within (5) seconds of power to the device

What does auto-monitoring or self-test mean?

The GFCI has internal parts that automatically conduct a test on regular intervals to ensure that the GFCI sensing and trip capabilities are intact. If the self-test sequence determines there is a potential loss of protection the GFCI will need to take specific actions such as tripping or providing an indication to alert end users

Why has the standard been revised?

Testing a GFCI is a good way to verify that it is providing protection. While all GFCIs should be tested monthly - and this is even printed on the face of every GFCI - it is believed that very few end users actual conduct this testing on a regular basis. There is technology available today that can supplement the manual testing and regularly conduct an automatic test of the circuit. This revision to the UL standard improves safety for the end-user by confirming that the GFCI can respond to a ground-fault and, if not, indicating to the user that it needs to be replaced.

What products are affected?

All Class A residential and commercial grade wallbox mounted GFCI receptacles as well as GFCI circuit breakers are affected by this change. Panel mount, in-line and portable GFCIs are not affected.

How does this affect me?

This change provides users an added layer of safety for GFCI protection. The new Leviton Self-Test GFCI family devices will have the same dimensions and install in exactly the same way as the current SmartlockPro Slim GFCIs. You will notice a gradual transition in the market to self-test models by all manufacturers of GFCIs. The new models will include instruction sheets explaining the features and indicators found on the new self-test devices.

Can I still use the current Leviton GFCIs?

Yes. You can continue to sell, install and use any GFCI products manufactured prior to the effective date of the revised standard with no restrictions on phase out.

What is the difference between "Self-Test" and "Auto-Monitoring"?

The terms are interchangeable and mean the same thing. UL uses the term auto-monitoring and many of the GFCI manufacturers use the term self-test.

Are the new Self-Test GFCIs required by the National Electrical Code^®?

The code requirements are not changing - i.e. where you need to use them. The change is to the UL standard which dictates the listing requirements and what kind of functionality needs to be included in them. All the GFCIs manufactured after June 29, 2015 must include the auto-monitoring and many of the GFCI manufacturers use the term self-test.

Will I need to replace all my current GFCI outlets with the self-test models?

No, as long as the outlet is not worn and you have conducted the manual test to ensure it is providing protected power. If you are doing a renovation or are looking to upgrade your older GFCIs, the self-test models do add an additional layer of protection.

Do I still need to test the GFCIs monthly?

Yes, you should continue to manually test your GFCIs on a monthly basis, this new UL requirement was created to provide an additional layer of protection to users. This is especially important in healthcare facilities.
